The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) or the MahaVitaran today put to rest all the controversies with respect to Smart Metering project for the ordinary power consumers. The all-powerful state electricity entity has clarified that there are no plans for installing smart meters for domestic power consumers.
Under the highly-publicised Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) of the Ministry of Power, Government of India, the state power distributor has started to undertake various activities such as separation of channels, reduction of distribution losses, strengthening of distribution system on a larger scale. The smart metering project is one of these programs the MSEDCL is implementing.
For all the above projects, the MSEDCL has taken prior approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), the highest decision making body in the state on the matters related to power.
It is expected that the ongoing projects will help consumers in Maharashtra to get reliable and quality power supply. Under the scheme, smart meters are being installed on all feeders in substations as well as distribution transformers and in all government offices. However, no pre-paid meters will be installed for general customers, the MahaVitaran clarified.
