Uniform Civil Code panel asks citizens to submit feedback by Nov 15
Citizens from every walk of life can submit their opinions, views, and responses via a newly launched portal, by email, or by post.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Committee has appealed citizens in Maharashtra to submit their response, suggestions and feedback by November 15, 2026 with regard to the ‘one civil law in personal matters for all the citizens’. For decades, the concept has been a bone of contention among the civil society groups with differing opinions.
The Committee’s Chairperson, former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai, inaugurated a special web portal https://ucc.maharashtra.gov.in — developed to collect citizens’ suggestions and feedback — via a virtual platform.
Citizens can submit their inputs through the portal at https://ucc.maharashtra.gov.in, via email at ucc@maharashtra.gov.in, or by post to the following address: Uniform Civil Code Committee Maharashtra Office, 2nd Floor, Old Custom House, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road, Fort, Mumbai, Maharashtra – 400001.
The committee will examine matters concerning marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession, women’s rights, and gender equality, as well as the constitutional, legal, social, and cultural aspects of the Uniform Civil Code. By gathering the views of representatives from various religions, legal experts, women’s organizations, social institutions, and the general public, the committee will formulate and submit necessary recommendations to the government.
Muslim groups in large numbers oppose the UCC claiming the move was against the very spirit of the Constitution as they believe the Code interferes in their internal religious matters. While those in favour who claim to be proponents of gender, socio-economic and educational equality vouch for the UCC as they believe it will bring a common civil law for all the citizens and end inequality.
