As she took from Tahsildar Nitinkumar Deore the cheque of compensation in her hands, Sangeeta could not hold back her emotions and welled up with tears.
Last year, Kai Vitthal Pawar, a farmer from Varhane village in Malegaon taluka, took his own life as he was under immense financial stress. Pawar had not been able to repay the loan he took for cultivating crops. Apart from that, he had to face unexpected crop failures on account of uncertain weather.
He has now left behind his bereft wife Sangeeta and three children. Pawar’s untimely death has caused his family members losing their sole breadwinner. Sangeeta now has the responsibility of sustaining a family of four on her shoulders.
Tahsildar Nitinkumar Rajaram Deore said on losing her husband who was the karta (the sole breadwinner) of her family, Sangeeta had been under tremendous mental stress. She was unable to figure out how to repay the loan and settle the debt once and for all and also sustain her family.
However, she was hopeful that she could get the Rs 1 lakh compensation given by the Maharashtra government to the kin of farmers who commit suicide owing to crop failures and their inability to repay crop loans due to financial distress.
With this hope in her eyes, she met Tehsildar Nitinkumar Deore along with relevant documents. Tehsildar Deore checked all the documents submitted by her and asked his staff to complete the paper works on a priority basis. “In the month of January we forwarded the case papers to the office of the District Collector for final approval and release of compensation,” Deore said.
“Afterwards, Revenue Assistant Umesh Gaikwad swung into action and prepared the bill sanctioning the money. Then a cheque of Rs 1 lakh was issued and subsequently handed over to Sangeeta in just two days,” Deore informed.
At the time of receiving the cheque from Tahsildar Deore, Sangeeta got overwhelmed with emotions and thanked him and the entire revenue administration for fast tracking her application.
